Inferring Quadrupolar Dynamo Mode from Sunspot Statistics

نویسندگان

چکیده

Observations of long-term north-south asymmetry in solar activity demand the equator-symmetric (quadrupolar) mode be present magnetic field line with dominant antisymmetric (dipolar) mode. This paper proposes treating sunspot area as a proxy for subsurface toroidal flux to infer quadrupolar dynamo from data. Toroidal pseudo-fluxes (PF) northern and southern hemispheres are defined signed plus or minus sign prescribed them accord Hale’s polarity rules. Statistical correlation analysis wavelet so-defined PFs reveal oscillations period about 16 yr amplitude 0.17 relative 22-yr dipolar

Comment on “The sunspot as a self-excited dynamo”

A recent paper claims that the well known Cowling ‘anti-dynamo’ theorem is a “misconception”, and that a simple axisymmetric sunspot model constitutes a counter example. We do not believe these claims to have been substantiated.

Minfer: Inferring Motif Statistics From Sampled Edges

Characterizing motif (i.e., locally connected subgraph patterns) statistics is important for understanding complex networks such as online social networks and communication networks. Previous work made the strong assumption that the graph topology of interest is known, and that the dataset either fits into main memory or is stored on disk such that it is not expensive to obtain all neighbors of...

Inferring Master Painters' Esthetic Biases from the Statistics of Portraits

The Processing Fluency Theory posits that the ease of sensory information processing in the brain facilitates esthetic pleasure. Accordingly, the theory would predict that master painters should display biases toward visual properties such as symmetry, balance, and moderate complexity. Have these biases been occurring and if so, have painters been optimizing these properties (fluency variables)...

Coronal Mass Ejections from Sunspot and non-Sunspot Regions

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) originate from closed magnetic field regions on the Sun, which are active regions and quiescent filament regions. The energetic populations such as halo CMEs, CMEs associated with magnetic clouds, geoeffective CMEs, CMEs associated with solar energetic particles and interplanetary type II radio bursts, and shock-driving CMEs have been found to originate from sunspo...

Inferring Demographic History Using Two-Locus Statistics.

Population demographic history may be learned from contemporary genetic variation data. Methods based on aggregating the statistics of many single loci into an allele frequency spectrum (AFS) have proven powerful, but such methods ignore potentially informative patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between neighboring loci. To leverage such patterns, we developed a composite-likelihood framew...
